Description
Nepalese Buddha, circa 1850
Bronze with gold overlay, embellishments of Coral and Lapis Lazuli
This is a representation of the 'Akshobhya' Buddha, Lord of the East. Seated in the lotus position, he wears the five-pointed crown as a sign that he stands above all the laws of nature and transcience, eternally imperturbable. His hand position is the 'Bhumisparsha' mudra which represents touching the earth. This gesture is only shown in a sitting Buddha. The right hand points to the earth, palm inward. The left hand rests on the lap, palm upward. It is known as 'Calling the Earth to Witness the Truth' mudra and represents the moment of Buddha attaining enlightenment.
From the private collection of a Tibetan businessman and former monk currently living in Kathmandu.
22" tall by 18" wide, 13-1/2" deep approximately
