Nepalese Buddha, circa 1850-1900
Bronze with gold overlay
This is a representation of the 'Akshobhya' Buddha, Lord of the East. His hand position is the 'Bhumisparsha' mudra which represents touching the earth. The right hand points to the earth. The left hand rests on the lap, holding a vessel of healing herbs. It is known as 'Calling the Earth to Witness the Truth' mudra and represents the moment of Buddha attaining enlightenment.
